What's the difference between relish, chutney, salsa, pickles and jam

What's the difference between relish, chutney, salsa, pickles and jam?

My panty and fridge is loaded with condiments. I doubt I have ever had a meal without adding something the chef didn't expect on the dish served. It could be salt - does anyone else have difficulty finding it on the table now a days?  to vinegar to hot sauce (of course).

A lot of customers confuse our pepper relish with pepper jelly so I thought it would be helpful to write out the differences between the most well known condiments.  So in this blog post, we will explore the differences between relish, chutney, salsa, pickles, and jam.

Relish:

Relish is a condiment made from chopped vegetables or fruits that are pickled in vinegar and sugar. It is usually used as a topping for hot dogs, hamburgers, and sandwiches. Relish can be sweet, sour, or spicy, depending on the ingredients used. It is typically made from pickled cucumbers, onions, and bell peppers. However, there are other variations that use different vegetables, such as corn or zucchini and ours SPICY PEPPERS!

Chutney:

Chutney is a condiment that originated in India and is made from a mixture of fruits or vegetables, spices, and vinegar or lime juice. Chutney can be sweet, sour, or spicy, and is often used as a dipping sauce or a condiment for meat, fish, or vegetables. Some popular chutneys include mango chutney, mint chutney, and tamarind chutney.

Salsa:

Salsa is a popular condiment that is made from a mixture of tomatoes, onions, peppers, and other ingredients. It is often used as a topping for Mexican dishes such as tacos and burritos, but it can also be used as a dipping sauce for chips. Salsa can be mild or hot, and there are many variations that use different types of peppers or fruits.

Pickles:

Pickles are a condiment made from cucumbers that have been pickled in vinegar and spices. They can be sweet or sour and are often used as a side dish or a topping for sandwiches. Pickles can also be made from other vegetables, such as carrots or green beans.

Jam:

Jam is a sweet spread made from cooked fruit and sugar. It is often used as a topping for toast or scones, but it can also be used as a filling for cakes and pastries. Jam can be made from a wide variety of fruits, including strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.

Now knowing these differences - why don't you mix it up at your next meal and have some relish and chutney with your eggs in the morning, and pickles in your drinks, and maybe some jam on your fish tacos? You never know what will delight your taste buds.
